January 23

We woke up to an overcast sky and said goodbye to MoRanch, heading south toward Del Rio. We pulled into Holiday Trav-L RV Park and settled in for the night. After getting parked and hooked up, the kids rode their bikes around the park while we stretched our legs and took in the new surroundings.

Later, we made a quick trip into town for Rudy’s BBQ and a Walmart run to stock up and brace for the winter storm that was headed our way. There’s something about preparing for weather in an RV that feels both adventurous and slightly nerve-wracking.

Cold and gray. The temperatures had dropped overnight, but thankfully there was no ice — yet. We bundled up and walked around the park for a bit before heading into town to pick up a new latch for the outside kitchen. RV life means something always needs a little fixing.

Dinner was classic comfort food: hot dogs, mac and cheese, and glazed carrots. Bethan baked homemade brownies, which made the RV feel extra cozy.

That evening, the temperature dropped hard and fast. Sleet turned to ice. The kids ended up sleeping on the dinette couch to stay warm. Cal slipped on the icy steps and took a fall — thankfully nothing serious, but definitely a reminder that winter RVing has its challenges.

We woke up to Siri announcing it was 46 degrees inside the kitchen. We quickly decided that we were not leaving that day. Sometimes the best travel decision is simply to stay put.

We extended our stay another night and ventured out for a short drive and a light hike around Laughlin Air Force Base Marina and Amistad National Recreation Area. The air was still cold, but it felt good to move.

That evening we watched more Fantastic Beasts and had H-E-B’s Frozen Sheet Pan Chicken and Veggies for dinner — easy, warm, and filling.

We left Del Rio and headed toward Sanderson RV Park. On the way, we stopped at Seminole Canyon State Park to stretch our legs and explore in the beautiful canyons a bit before finishing the drive.
